What is the difference between a B-1 and a B-2 visa?

A B-1 and a B-2 visa are two types of visas that non-U.S. citizens may receive in order to enter and stay in North Carolina, or other parts of the United States. The main difference between a B-1 and a B-2 visa is the type of activities the visitor will be engaging in while in the United States. A B-1 visa is for temporary business-related activities such as conferences, consulting, or delivering a lecture. A B-1 visa cannot be used for work activities that require a work visa or any other type of U.S. work authorization. A B-2 visa is for activities not related to work, such as tourism, visiting family or friends, medical treatment, participation in social events, or studying at a non-degree program. If a student wants to study in the United States for longer than 12 months, they will need a student visa (F-1 visa). Both the B-1 and B-2 visas have time limits and are generally issued with an initial period of stay of 6-months. Extension of the stay can be requested, but the visitor may need to provide details about the reason for their stay, or provide evidence of financial support.
