When do I need to apply for a visa before my studies begin?
In Kansas, international students should apply for their visa at least three months before their studies begin in order to allow enough time for processing. The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) suggests that students apply as soon as possible to avoid any potential delays in the application process. The first step in applying for a visa is submitting the written application and other required documents to the United States Embassy. This includes proof of enrollment in a Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP)-certified school, proof of financial stability, and evidence that the student is in sound academic and social standing. The application must also be accompanied by a Form I-20, which is the document that allows international students to enter the U.S. Upon submission of the application, students must also pay the visa application fee and schedule an interview at their nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate. At the interview, the visa applicant will be expected to answer questions about their educational background, purpose of coming to the U.S., and financial ability to cover educational and living expenses. If the student’s visa application is approved, they must pay a visa issuance fee before the visa can be issued. Once the visa has been obtained, students can travel to the U.S. and begin their studies. It is important to note that international students must maintain their visa status while studying in the U.S., otherwise, they may be subject to removal from the country.
