What is the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program?
The J-1 Exchange Visitor Program is a program that enables foreign nationals to temporarily enter the United States to travel, study, work, and participate in cultural exchange programs. This program is administered by the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). The program is available to high school students who wish to receive a primarily academic educational experience in Kansas. Students must be legally admitted to an authorized U.S. school and must meet certain eligibility requirements. These requirements may include being proficient in the English language, having good academic standing, and having proof of sufficient funds for living and studying in the U.S. Students in the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program may engage in short-term activities such as travel, study tours, internships, and classroom teaching. Additionally, they may also engage in activities such as part-time work, cultural exchange, music and art performances, and volunteer work. The purpose of the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program is to expose foreign students to American cultural, educational, and professional practices so they can gain a better understanding of how these practices differ from their home countries. It is hoped that the knowledge and experience gained through the program will help to foster international understanding and peace.
