What is an L-1 visa?

An L-1 visa is a type of work visa granted to certain foreign workers by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). L-1 visas are intended to allow companies to transfer employees from their foreign branches to their U.S. locations. This type of visa is especially useful for students in California who wish to work and further develop the skills they acquired during their studies. The L-1 visa is a nonimmigrant visa, meaning that the visa holder may stay in the U.S. for a specific purpose but must eventually return to their home country. The L-1 visa allows the visa holder to stay and work in the U.S. for up to seven years. During this time, the visa holder is allowed to travel freely and work in the U.S. for the company that petitioned for the visa. To qualify for an L-1 visa, the student must have worked for the company for at least one year in the three years prior to the visa application. Additionally, the student must be in a “specialized knowledge” role. This means that the student must possess skills and knowledge that are uncommon or unique and are not easily obtained by other workers. In California, the L-1 visa can be a great tool for students to stay and work in the U.S. after their studies and gain valuable work experience. This can be a great opportunity for students to develop their professional careers in the U.S. while also being able to travel back to their home countries.
