What is the F-1 CPT program?
The F-1 CPT program is an acronym for Curricular Practical Training and is used to help international students in Florida who are studying under an F-1 visa. This program allows international students to gain experience in their field of study through an internship or practical training. CPT is a type of work authorization that allows international students to maintain their F-1 status while they gain practical work experience in the U.S. The purpose of this program is to supplement the student’s classroom learning with practical experience. Generally, the work must be related to the student’s major field of study. Students must get approval from their school’s designated official in order to participate in this program. There are two types of CPT programs that international students in Florida can participate in. The first type is the internship CPT, which requires the student to be enrolled in a class to earn academic credit, and the employer must offer a learning experience related to the student’s field of study. The second type is the experiential learning CPT, which does not require the student to be enrolled in a class, but the employer must provide a structured and supervised learning experience. In order to maintain their F-1 visa status while participating in the F-1 CPT program, students must keep in mind certain regulations, such as the “20 hour rule”, which states that students must not work more than 20 hours per week while school is in session. Additionally, students must abide by the regulations set forth by their school in order to remain in good academic standing.
