What is the Green Card?

A Green Card is a form of identification issued by the United States government to non-U.S. citizens. It grants permanent residence in the United States and allows individuals to remain in the country indefinitely. The Green Card also known as a Permanent Resident Card, is issued by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). In Virginia, Green Card holders have the right to apply for citizenship after a certain amount of time, generally five years. To be eligible for a Green Card in Virginia, applicants must meet certain requirements. Usually, the applicant must have a family member who is a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident, or have received an employment-based or other type of visa. Other paths to obtaining a Green Card include marriage-based petitions, certain refugee or asylum programs, or receiving a Green Card through the Diversity Immigrant Visa (DV) program. Once a Green Card is issued, the holder may remain in the United States indefinitely, be eligible for certain federal benefits, and apply for citizenship. Becoming a U.S. citizen in Virginia requires that the applicant meet certain criteria; these criteria include being 18 years of age, having a Green Card for at least five years, having a record of good moral character, and passing an exam on U.S. civics and history. Once the applicant has met all the requirements, the applicant may apply for naturalization and eventually be granted citizenship.
