What is the process of getting a green card?

In order to obtain a green card, also known as a lawful permanent residence (LPR) in the United States, you must first start the process of either getting an immigrant visa from outside of the United States, or be in the United States with a corresponding nonimmigrant visa and apply for a change of status. In order to apply for an immigrant visa, you must have a sponsor in the United States who is either an immediate relative or an employer. You and your sponsor must fill out the Form I-130, Petition for Alien Relative, or Form I-140, Immigrant Petition for Alien Worker, respectively. Once the form is complete and filed, you will receive a visa number. You will then need to apply for an immigrant visa. You can do this either online or by visiting the U.S. Department of State embassy or consulate in your country. If you are already in the United States and wish to apply for a change of status, you will need to fill out and submit Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status. Once the form is complete, you will need to submit it as well as the necessary supporting documents and a filing fee. If you receive your green card, you will be able to live, work, and study in the United States permanently. You will be able to travel in and out of the U.S. without issue, and with enough time, you may even be eligible to apply for U.S. citizenship.
