What is a re-entry permit?

A re-entry permit is an authorization for a person who is not a United States citizen to return to the United States after traveling overseas. The permit is issued by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and must be acquired before traveling outside of the U.S. In California, the re-entry permit is a travel document that is issued to lawful permanent residents (LPRs) and Lawful Permanent Residents in Designated Countries (LPRDCs). The document is valid for two years and can be used to re-enter the United States after temporary absences of up to two years. A re-entry permit allows persons lawfully admitted to the United States as an immigrant to resume their residence within two years without applying for readmission. This permit is necessary for those who expect to be absent from the United States for extended periods of time or for those who intend to travel abroad and need to acquire a visa to re-enter the United States. In order to apply for a re-entry permit, applicants must fill out Form I-131, Application for Travel Document, and provide proof of U.S. permanent residency. Applicants must also provide two photographs, pay the applicable filing fee, and submit additional forms and documents, as applicable. Upon approval of the Form I-131 and payment of the fee, the USCIS will issue the re-entry permit.
