How can I apply for citizenship?

In Indiana, if you wish to apply for citizenship, you must first meet certain eligibility criteria. Your individual circumstances will determine which citizenship option is available to you. To apply for U.S. citizenship, you must generally be 18 years or older and have been a permanent resident of the United States (green card holder) for at least five years. If you are applying as the spouse of a U.S. citizen, you may be able to apply after only three years of residency. Additionally, you must have been physically present in the U.S. for at least 30 months of the last five years. If you are applying for naturalization, you must also have a basic knowledge of the English language, an understanding of the history and principles of the U.S. government, and be of good moral character. You will also need to submit a Form N-400, Application for Naturalization, and pay the application processing fee. After you submit the Form N-400, you will typically be invited to attend an interview with a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) officer. The citizenship interview will cover questions related to your application, your knowledge of English, U.S. history, and civics. You may also be asked to provide additional evidence to support your application, such as proof of residency and identity documents. To complete the naturalization process, you must then take the Oath of Allegiance to the United States. If you are successful, you will receive a Certificate of Naturalization.
