What is an immigrant visa?

An immigrant visa is a type of visa issued by the U.S. government that allows an individual to lawfully become a permanent resident of the United States. In order to obtain an immigrant visa, non-U.S. citizens must meet certain criteria and apply for the visa through the U.S. Department of State. Each visa is individually numbered, and is valid for a limited time. In the state of Texas, there are several different types of immigrant visas available. For those wanting to visit the United States temporarily, nonimmigrant visas such as tourist visas and student visas are available. For those who desire to live and work in the United States permanently, a work permit, or employment-based visa, is necessary. For individuals who wish to become U.S. citizens, they must first obtain a green card by applying for an immigrant visa. Once a person has been approved for an immigrant visa, they must complete certain requirements in order to receive the visa. This may include attending an alien registration interview, submitting proof of identity and financial stability, and completing biometric scanning. Once the individual has met all necessary requirements, they will be granted their immigrant visa.
