What is the difference between a green card and work authorization?
A green card, also known as a permanent resident card, is a document that is issued by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to a foreign national who obtains legal permanent residency in the United States. This document gives the individual the right to live and work permanently in the United States. Work authorization is a document that is issued by the USCIS to an individual who is a non-U.S. citizen and who is authorized to work in the United States. This document grants the individual the right to receive payment for his or her services from a U.S. employer. Work authorization documents are typically valid for a designated period of time, with some lasting for several years. The main difference between a green card and work authorization is that a green card grants the individual permanent residency in the United States, while work authorization is a temporary document that grants the individual permission to work in the United States for a limited amount of time. The individual must have a valid green card in order to obtain a work authorization document from the USCIS. The process of obtaining a green card is much more involved and lengthy than the process of obtaining a work authorization document.
