What is the refugee/asylee process?

The refugee/asylee process is a process whereby people who cannot return to their home countries due to fear of persecution can seek protection in the state of Washington. This could be due to their race, religion, nationality, belonging to a particular social group, or political opinion. The first step in this process is for the person to receive refugee or asylee status from the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). To do this, the person must prove their fear of persecution in their home country, by providing documentary evidence and other forms of proof. Once the individual has been granted refugee/asylee status, they can then apply for refugee resettlement assistance in Washington. This can include things like food assistance, housing, health care, employment assistance, school enrollment, and more. After the individual has been resettled, they must apply for permanent residence, by submitting the required forms and fee. Once their status has been approved, they can then apply for Citizenship if they desire to do so. The refugee/asylee process is long and complex, but it offers protection and a chance at a better life for those persecuted in their home countries. It also allows them to contribute to the Washington economy, society and culture.
