How do I renew my Employment Authorization Document (EAD)?

In order to renew your Employment Authorization Document (EAD), commonly known as a “work permit”, you must file Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization. This form is used to apply for a new EAD and is available through the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). To renew the EAD, you must file Form I-765 and include the following documents: 1. A copy of your current EAD; 2. A copy of your passport showing current U.S. visa, if applicable; and 3. Proof of your identity, such as a valid driver’s license and birth certificate. When filing your I-765 form, you must also provide payment for the filing fee. The fee amount is currently $410, as of 2020. If you cannot afford the fee, you may be eligible to request a fee waiver or deferred action. Once the form and documents have been submitted, USCIS will review your application and typically issue an approval or denial within 90 days. If approved, you will receive your new EAD in the mail. If your application is denied, you may appeal the decision. It is important to note that your EAD must be renewed before its expiration date to ensure continued employment authorization. If you fail to renew your EAD on time, you will no longer be eligible to work in Virginia, and in some cases, you may be subject to removal proceedings. Therefore, it is important to make sure that you submit your application as soon as possible so that you are able to work in the state of Virginia.
