What is the Norris-LaGuardia Act?

The Norris-LaGuardia Act is a federal law passed in 1932 which limits the power of the courts to issue injunctions in certain labor disputes. The Act is applicable in the state of New York and covers disputes between employers, unions, and workers. The Act was passed in response to the growing power of large corporations and the abuse of court injunctions. It prohibits federal courts from issuing any injunction in a labor dispute, except under very specific circumstances. These circumstances include when an injunction is necessary to protect property from irreparable harm or illegal acts, or when a labor organization is violating a collective bargaining agreement The Act also prohibits employers from interfering with their employees’ right to organize unions and from discriminating against union members or encouraging employees to join a particular union. It also prohibits yellow-dog contracts, which are agreements between employers and employees that forbid workers from joining unions. The Act was a major victory for workers and unions in the early 1930s. It gave them more strength and power in their negotiations with employers and made it easier for workers to fight back against employers who try to silence them.
