What is the role of the Immigration Reform and Control Act in labor law?
The Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA) of 1986 is a landmark federal law that fundamentally changed the labor law landscape in the United States. IRCA prohibits employers from hiring, discharging, or in any other way discriminating against immigrants who are unauthorized to work in the United States. Under the law, employers must verify that an employee is authorized to work in the United States, both when hiring and through an annual review.
