What is a treaty?

A treaty is a binding agreement between two or more countries. The agreement is usually written and signed by leaders of the respective countries. A treaty may deal with any number of issues, such as trade, military alliances, border disputes, or environmental protection. In Tennessee, international law is primarily governed by two treaties: the Treaty of Paris (1783) and the Treaty of Versailles (1919). The Treaty of Paris was signed in 1783 and ended the Revolutionary War between the United States and Great Britain. This treaty declared the United States to be an independent nation. It also established the boundaries between the United States and Canada, and between the United States and Great Britain. The Treaty of Versailles was signed in 1919 following World War I. This treaty established the League of Nations, an international body that sought to address global issues and promote international peace. It also included other provisions, such as the reparation of damages incurred by Germany and the relocation of certain European nations. Treaties are an important part of international law in Tennessee. They establish the legal foundation for international relations and help define the rights of individuals and countries. As such, they must be followed and respected by all states.
