What is the International Labour Organization (ILO)?
The International Labour Organization (ILO) is an organization that promotes and protects fundamental labor rights in California and around the world. The ILO was established in 1919, as part of the Treaty of Versailles that ended World War I, and is now part of the United Nations. The ILO’s main mission is to ensure labor rights such as those related to freedom of association, collective bargaining, forced labor, child labor, discrimination, and the right to fair wages and working conditions. In addition to these core labor rights, the ILO has created international labor standards that lay down principles, rights, and duties that employers, workers, and governments have to observe. These standards have been adopted in over 100 countries, including California. As a result, employers operating in California must meet the international standards set by the ILO in order to ensure that their workers are treated fairly and receive decent wages and working conditions. The ILO also works to combat poverty and promote economic and social development around the world. It provides technical assistance to help countries develop effective labor markets and productive work environments. Through its various activities, the ILO helps protect the fundamental labor rights of workers in California and around the world.
