What is the International Court of Justice Advisory Opinion?

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) Advisory Opinion is an advisory opinion given by the ICJ, which is the highest court of the United Nations. The opinion is a legal opinion that is released to the public and is used to help guide international law. An Advisory Opinion is used by the international community to determine whether a certain action or behavior violates international law. The ICJ is based in The Hague, Netherlands, and consists of 15 independent judges from around the world. When a dispute arises which has not been settled between two countries, either country may bring their case to the ICJ for a decision. The court may render an Advisory Opinion, which is a non-binding opinion about the case. This opinion is based on the international law, such as the UN Charter, treaties, and customary international law. The Advisory Opinion is important because it provides guidance on how to interpret international law in a particular situation. It also serves as a tool for countries to resolve disputes without going to the ICJ for an actual ruling. In Oregon, the Advisory Opinion is particularly useful because it provides a clear interpretation of what international law applies and can serve as a guide for Oregonians when making decisions related to international issues.
