What is the International Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)?
The International Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is an international agreement that sets goals for protecting the diversity of life on Earth. It was adopted at the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and came into force in 1993. The CBD is one of the most significant agreements in international environmental law. The CBD recognizes the importance of protecting the world’s biological diversity, promotes the sustainable use of its components, and encourages the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising from the use of genetic resources. It also calls for states to cooperate in the conservation of biological diversity. The CBD has three primary objectives – the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the use of genetic resources. The CBD has been ratified by all the countries in Oregon and all member countries of the United Nations. As of 2017, it has 197 members, which includes nearly every country on Earth. In Oregon, the Department of Environmental Quality is responsible for implementing the CBD. The department works with local and regional partners to create plans for conserving natural resources, manage wildlife populations, and promote sustainable land use.
