What is the International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD)?

The International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) is a global agreement that was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2006. The CRPD is the first internationally-recognized human rights convention which specifically addresses the rights of people with disabilities across the globe. It acknowledges that people with disabilities have the same fundamental human rights, like the right to live with dignity and to be protected against discrimination. The convention consists of thirty articles which outline the rights of people with disabilities, including access to education, employment and healthcare, the freedom of movement, access to technology, as well as the right to equal recognition before the law. The CRPD also covers areas such as the right to privacy and autonomy, the right to freedom from exploitation, abuse, and violence, and the right to participation in the political process. The CRPD has been ratified by more than 170 countries, including the United States, and has been incorporated in Oregon state law. In Oregon, this means that people with disabilities are offered protection and have the right to an appropriate education, employment opportunities, access to services, and the right to participate in the political process.
