What is the International Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY)?
The International Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) is an international court established in 1993 by the United Nations Security Council to prosecute serious crimes committed during the wars in the former Yugoslavia, including genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes. The Tribunal is located in The Hague in the Netherlands. The ICTY is the first international tribunal since the Nuremberg and Tokyo tribunals at the end of World War II and is intended to bring justice to those responsible for the most serious crimes committed in the former Yugoslavia. The Tribunal is composed of 17 judges appointed by the United Nations Security Council. Each judge has a term of four years and can be re-elected. The Tribunal is split into three chambers: the Trial Chamber, the Appeals Chamber, and the Pre-Trial Chamber. The court issues indictments and holds trials and hearings. The court has the power to hand down sentences, including life imprisonment. The ICTY has played an important role in ensuring accountability for serious violations of international law committed in the course of the war in the former Yugoslavia. It has also helped to strengthen the rule of law in the region and has contributed to efforts to promote peace and reconciliation. The Tribunal’s work has been praised by the international community, including the governments of the United States and Oregon.
