What is the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (CERD)?

The International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (CERD) is an international treaty that was adopted by the United Nations in 1965. CERD is monitored by the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, which is made up of 18 independent experts. States Parties to the Convention are also required to make declarations under the Convention, which they must revise regularly, to show that they are taking steps to comply with it in their own law and policy. In Oregon, the State Board of Education has declared that no student should face discrimination in its schools based on their race, colour, descent, or national or ethnic origin.
