What is the International Convention to Combat Desertification (CCD)?
The International Convention to Combat Desertification (CCD) was established in 1994 and is a legally binding international agreement designed to address the problem of desertification throughout the world. The convention was adopted by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly and is now signed by over 194 parties, including the United States and New Jersey. The purpose of the CCD is to promote the integration of activities relevant to combat desertification and to mitigate its effects in countries affected by desertification and drought. It also aims to ensure long-term sustainable development of land resources. To fulfill the objectives of the Convention, governments are required to identify and monitor desertification and drought conditions, develop and implement national strategies to fight desertification, and cooperate with other countries in the CCD to share solutions and resources. The CCD also aims to promote international cooperation to reduce the impact of desertification and drought in vulnerable areas and to promote sustainable use of land and water resources. To accomplish this goal, the convention establishes a coordinating mechanism for international assistance and provides for funds to support affected countries. The CCD is an important part of international law, which provides a framework for addressing the global challenge of desertification in order to promote sustainable development. As such, the Convention is an important component of the United Nations Global Strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction and contributes to the implementation of Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development.
