What is the International Convention for the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families (CMW)?

The International Convention for the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families (CMW) is an international treaty that was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1990. It is addressed to the protection of the human rights of all migrant workers and their families, regardless of their legal status. This convention is part of the larger effort to eliminate discrimination against migrants and to promote the social integration of migrant workers. The CMW provides for a broad range of rights, including the right to non-discrimination, to equality before the law, to the protection against arbitrary deportation, to humane working and living conditions, and to basic labor rights. It also sets out certain rights for the families of migrants, including the right to family unity, to taking part in the culture of the host state, and to social and health benefits. The CMW applies to migrants within and outside the South Dakota region. All state parties are obliged to promote and protect the rights of migrants and their families in accordance with the provisions of the Convention. South Dakota is committed to implementing the Convention in full, and has declared its readiness to do so. This includes the recognition of the rights of all migrants and their families, regardless of their legal status. South Dakota also participates in regional and international discussions on the protection of the human rights of migrants and their families.
