What are the international regulations on intellectual property rights?

Intellectual property rights are rights that protect the creations of the mind such as inventions, literary and artistic works, and symbols, names, images, and designs used in commerce. In South Carolina, international regulations on intellectual property rights are set by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and administered by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The WIPO administers several different international agreements which are designed to regulate and protect intellectual property rights around the world. The first is the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT). This treaty helps inventors protect their inventions in multiple countries at once by filing a single application for patent protection. It also provides inventors with an international search report that can be used to determine if their invention is novel. The second is the Paris Convention which provides a way for countries to protect foreign nationals who wish to patent their inventions in their country. Lastly, there is the Berne Convention which protects the rights of authors, publishers, and inventors of literary and artistic works. In addition to these international agreements, South Carolina also has its own set of intellectual property laws which are meant to protect the intellectual property rights of businesses and individuals. These laws are enforced by the South Carolina Secretary of State’s Office and provide protection for copyrights, trademarks, patents, and trade secrets. All together, South Carolina and the international community have established several regulations to ensure that intellectual property rights are respected and protected.
