What is the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW)?

The International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) is an international human rights treaty adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1979. Widely regarded as an international bill of rights for women, CEDAW is the only human rights treaty that explicitly prohibits discrimination against women on the basis of sex. The CEDAW has 30 articles that provide an in-depth list of discriminatory practices that are considered to be violations of the treaty. The scope of the CEDAW covers a wide range of issues, including labour rights, the right to education, the right to health and medical services, political rights, family law, and rights in regards to national laws. South Dakota is one of several states in the United States that have not yet ratified the CEDAW. Due to this, women in South Dakota do not have the same level of protection from discrimination as those in countries that have ratified the treaty. In addition, as a state that has yet to ratify the CEDAW, South Dakota is unable to access the resources made available by the treaty, such as international aid and technical assistance. This limits the ability of South Dakota to address discrimination against women in the state and protect their rights. The CEDAW is an important tool in the fight for gender equality across the world. By ratifying the treaty, South Dakota will not only be able to protect the rights of its women, but will also be able to reap the benefits of participating in a global human rights movement.
