What is the Law of the Sea Tribunal (ITLOS)?

The Law of the Sea Tribunal, also known as the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS), is an international court established by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) of 1982. The tribunal has the authority to settle disputes between parties to the UNCLOS and to provide advisory opinions on legal questions related to the Convention. The tribunal can also issue advisory opinions on questions of international law referred by any UN or Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) organ, organization, or other such entity.
