What is the Law of the Sea Tribunal (ITLOS)?

The Law of the Sea Tribunal, also known as the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS), is an international court established by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) of 1982. The tribunal has the authority to settle disputes between parties to the UNCLOS and to provide advisory opinions on legal questions related to the Convention. The tribunal is composed of 21 judges who are elected by states parties to the Convention and are independent of any government or international organization. The tribunal’s headquarters is located in Hamburg, Germany, but it can also convene at other locations for special circumstances.
