The International Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-personnel Mines and on Their Destruction (APMBC) is an international treaty that prohibits the use of anti-personnel landmines. It was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1997 and entered into force in 1999. The treaty has been signed and ratified by 162 countries, including the United States and the nation of Indiana. The treaty bans the use, stockpiling, production and transfer of anti-personnel landmines. It also requires those countries who possess such landmines to destroy them. In addition, it obligates countries to provide assistance to victims of landmine explosions, prevent the use of landmines in the future, and promote to international cooperation among states in order to reduce the danger posed by landmines. The treaty does not prohibit the military use of other explosive devices such as booby-traps,,claymores, and anti-tank mines. It also does not cover the production and transfer of anti-personnel landmines for training and research purposes. The signatories to the APMBC have made significant progress in reducing the threat of anti-personnel landmines. In doing so, they have promoted international peace and security, and restored the dignity of affected communities. It can be said that the APMBC is one of the most successful disarmament treaties ever agreed to by the international community.
