What is the role of an insurance appraisal?
An insurance appraisal plays an important role in South Dakota insurance law. It provides an objective third-party evaluation of an insured’s property or the amount of money they should receive in an insurance claim. Without an appraiser, the insured’s view of the value of the property and the insurer’s view of the value could be vastly different. An insurance appraisal begins with an independent appraiser being appointed by the insurer or policyholder. The appraiser will then inspect the property or damage and document the findings. After the appraisal is done, the appraiser will provide an estimate of the property’s or damages’ value. This estimate will be based on the prevalent rate of compensation in the area and the condition of the property, as well as any other special considerations that might depend on the type of property involved. The appraiser’s report will be the basis for the settlement between the parties. If an agreement is not reached, the parties can choose to submit the dispute to a third-party arbitrator. The arbitrator will review the appraiser’s report and make a decision based on the information provided. Once the arbitrator’s decision is accepted, the parties will be bound by it and must work to resolve the dispute. In short, an insurance appraisal is an essential part of South Dakota insurance law as it provides an objective, unbiased assessment of an insured property’s value or the amount of money they should receive in an insurance claim. This helps ensure a fair and equitable resolution of any dispute between the insurer and the policyholder.
