What punishments or sanctions can courts impose on juvenile delinquents?
In Tennessee, juvenile delinquents may face a range of punishments or sanctions when convicted of a crime. Depending on the severity of the crime and the juvenile’s prior criminal history, a court may order either probation, some form of community service or restitution, or confinement in a detention center or juvenile prison. Probation is typically the most common punishment and is often ordered when the punishment is minor or the juvenile has no prior criminal record. With probation, the juvenile is typically given a set of conditions set by the court or the probation officer which must be met in order for the probation to be successfully completed. If the court wishes to impose a more severe punishment, the juvenile may be ordered to perform community service or to make financial restitution for the damages they caused. Community service might include cleaning up the neighborhood, working at a local shelter or charity, or helping in the courtroom. Alternatively, if the offender caused significant damage to property, the court may order a financial restitution payment to be made to the victim. In extreme cases of serious crimes or if the juvenile has a long criminal history, the court may order a period of confinement in a juvenile detention center or prison. This is typically a last resort punishment and only imposed when other sanctions have failed.
