What is the difference between a juvenile detention facility and a juvenile correctional facility?
In California, juvenile detention facilities and juvenile correctional facilities are two separate types of institutions that serve different purposes for youth who are in the juvenile justice system. A juvenile detention facility is the initial intake location for juveniles who have committed a crime or may have violated probation. This type of facility is designed to provide a secure place for the juvenile to stay while awaiting court or until a suitable and safe environment can be found. Juvenile detention facilities are short-term facilities and juveniles may be held at this facility for a few days or up to several weeks. A juvenile correctional facility is a more long-term facility that is typically used when a juvenile has been sentenced to a lengthier period of incarceration, such as after a guilty plea or conviction. This type of facility may provide the youth with education, counseling and other services in order to help them improve their behavior and have a better chance of rehabilitation and successful reintegration into society upon release. Juveniles may be held at a correctional facility for months or even years. The main difference between a juvenile detention facility and a juvenile correctional facility is the type of security, length of stay and services that are provided. Juvenile detention facilities are secure facilities that are usually used for shorter periods of time, while juvenile correctional facilities are more long-term facilities that provide more services with the goal of rehabilitation.
