How do juvenile crime statistics compare to adult crime statistics?

In California, juvenile crime statistics show that the number of juvenile arrests has been declining since 2010, while adult arrests have remained relatively consistent. According to the California Department of Justice’s 2018 Crime in California report, the number of arrests of juveniles (persons under 18) for both violent and property crimes decreased by 32 percent from 2010 to 2018. In contrast, violent and property adult arrests decreased by only 12 and 9 percent respectively from 2010 to 2018. Interestingly, the report also reveals a significant difference in the seriousness of juvenile and adult criminal behavior. For example, from 2010 to 2018, juvenile arrests for homicide had dropped by 63 percent, whereas adult arrests for homicide had only decreased by 8 percent. Additionally, juvenile arrests for arson, robbery, and burglary decreased by 24, 38, and 32 percent respectively, whereas the adult arrests for these crimes had only dropped by 12, 11, and 9 percent respectively. These statistics demonstrate that, in California, juvenile criminal behavior is on the decline, while adult criminal behavior has remained more consistent. Additionally, juvenile criminal behavior appears to be less serious than adult criminal behavior.
