What is the difference between a juvenile detention facility and a juvenile correctional facility?

In Texas, there are two different kinds of facilities that juveniles can be held in. The difference between a juvenile detention facility and a juvenile correctional facility is the length of time the juvenile will stay in each facility and the services provided by each. A juvenile detention facility is used for juveniles who have not yet gone to trial. Juveniles who are in a detention facility are usually there for a few hours to several days. During this time, juveniles are held in a secure location, supervised by staff, and generally provide services such as mental health screening, education, and recreational activities. A juvenile correctional facility is a secure facility used for long-term residential treatment for juveniles who have been convicted of a crime. Juveniles in a correctional facility can stay anywhere from a few months to a few years. Unlike a detention facility, juveniles in a correctional facility are subject to more stringent security measures and have limited access to contact with the outside world. Services provided in these facilities include intensive individual and group counseling, academic education, vocational programming, medical services, and recreational activities. The main difference between a juvenile detention facility and a juvenile correctional facility is the length of time the juvenile will stay in each facility and the services provided.
