What is the difference between a juvenile detention facility and a juvenile residential facility?

In Florida, the difference between a Juvenile Detention Facility and a Juvenile Residential Facility is significant and critical. A Juvenile Detention Facility, also known as a Juvenile Holding Center, is where a juvenile offender, or minor, is held after being arrested or detained for a criminal act. This facility is generally under the jurisdiction of the county’s juvenile court system. Juveniles may stay in the facility for no more than 24 hours before their court appearance, during which a judge will determine if further consequences are necessary. A Juvenile Residential Facility, on the other hand, houses juvenile offenders for more extended periods of time. This facility is typically intended for juveniles who have been sentenced to a second or third degree felony. This facility offers treatment services such as counseling, education and job training courses in order to help the juvenile develop skills that will assist them once they’re released back into the community. Overall, the main difference between a Juvenile Detention Facility and a Juvenile Residential Facility is the amount of time a juvenile spends in the facility and the services that are offered. Juvenile Detention Facilities are short-term facilities and do not provide the same level of services as a Juvenile Residential Facility. The latter offers more comprehensive support and is aimed towards helping minors develop the skills needed to live successful lives outside of the Juvenile Court System.
