What is the difference between a juvenile detention facility and a juvenile residential facility?

In Texas, juvenile justice is handled through the Texas Juvenile Justice Department and overseen by the Texas legislature and judicial system. A juvenile detention facility is a type of secure facility operated by the state or local government, and provides short-term care for juveniles who have been arrested and accused of a crime. Juveniles in this facility are held in secure housing and have limited access to the outside world. A juvenile residential facility, by contrast, is a type of long-term care facility operated by the state, local government or private organizations. This type of facility is commonly referred to as a “group home” and can provide mental health treatments, educational services, and medical and therapeutic care in addition to residential services. Juveniles in this type of facility usually live in a group home setting and have access to necessary resources while residing there. The two types of juvenile facilities serve very different purposes. A juvenile detention facility is primarily focused on custody and punishment, while a juvenile residential facility is geared toward rehabilitation and providing the necessary resources for rehabilitation. As such, detention facilities are geared more towards hardcore offenders, while residential facilities provide long-term care for juveniles who need support and resources to help them become productive citizens.
