What is the union organizing process?
The union organizing process in North Carolina is a series of steps that people can take to form a union in their workplace. The process begins with workers having a meeting to discuss the benefits of forming a union. At this meeting, workers can organize themselves and start collecting signatures from other workers demanding that a union be formed. After the signatures are collected, the group will then have to file a petition with the National Labor Relations Board for a formal union election. At the election, workers will vote on whether or not they want to form a union. If more than 50% of the workers vote in favor of forming a union, the NLRB will then certify the union. They will also issue a bargaining agreement between the employer and the newly-formed union. This agreement will set out terms for wages, benefits, and working conditions. Once the bargaining agreement is complete, the employer is obligated to negotiate with the union and ensure that all of the terms of the agreement are being adhered to. Finally, workers will vote on whether or not to ratify the agreement. If it is ratified, the union will be officially established and it will be responsible for negotiating with the employer on behalf of its members.
