Are there any requirements to keep a log of alcohol sales?

In the state of Virginia, there are specific, detailed requirements for alcohol sellers to keep a log of alcohol sales. These requirements are administered by the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority and enforced by local ABC agents. If an ABC licensee is selling spirits, beer, or wine for off-premise consumption, they must maintain a log or diary of all spirit sales. This log or diary should contain the following information: name and address of the purchaser, the buyer’s age, type and quantity of alcoholic beverage purchased, price paid, payment method, date of sale, and the employee responsible for the sale. This log must be kept for a period of one year and must be made available to ABC agents upon request. In addition, ABC agents conduct random inspections of alcohol retailers and may ask questions of employees about their sale policies and procedures. ABC agents may also ask to look at the log or diary of spirit sales to ensure that the retailer is keeping accurate records. Therefore, it is important for all ABC licensees in Virginia to maintain an up-to-date log or diary of spirit sales in order to be in compliance with Virginia liquor liability law. Failure to do so may result in a variety of consequences, including fines, suspension or revocation of the ABC license, and in some cases, criminal charges.
