What are union dues and how much do they cost?

Union dues are fees that employees must pay to become a union member and be able to take advantage of the benefits the union provides. The dues are used for the administrative costs of the union such as paying staff salaries, providing legal counsel, and organizing activities. The amount of union dues depends on the collective bargaining agreement between the union and the employer. In Arizona, the general rate of union dues is 2.5% of an employee’s gross annual salary, but can be higher or lower depending on the specific agreement. Employees may be required to pay what is called a “fair-share” fee in lieu of union dues. This fee is the portion of the dues which is used for non-political activities such as bargaining on behalf of the union members. In addition, fees are often charged for legal defense and support in the event of a labor dispute. Although unions are important in protecting the rights of workers, not all employees choose to join a union. Union membership is voluntary, and members do not need to be employed by the same employer. In Arizona, employees can choose not to join and will not be required to pay dues. Those who do choose to join can expect to pay the dues and fees associated with membership.
