What are the legal requirements to get married?

In Virginia, there are a few legal requirements that must be met in order to get married. First, both individuals must be at least 18 years old in order to be legally allowed to marry, or 16 years old with parental consent. Both individuals must also provide valid forms of identification when applying for a marriage license, such as a driver’s license, birth certificate, or passport. It is also important to note that there are certain kinds of marriages that are not allowed in Virginia, such as same-sex marriage or common law marriage (where a couple agrees to be married without going through a formal ceremony). Additionally, couples wanting to get married in Virginia must apply for a marriage license in the county they plan to get married. The couple must fill out a form, provide proof of their identity, pay the necessary fee, and the license is valid for 60 days. After the marriage license is issued, couples are then required to have a ceremony in order to get married. This ceremony must be officiated either by a minister, priest, or rabbi of any religious denomination, or any magistrate authorized by law to perform marriages. The officiator must sign the marriage license afterward and the marriage is then considered legal.
