No, you cannot grow your own marijuana with a medical marijuana card in Virginia. Possession of marijuana for medical use is currently legal in Virginia, but under strict conditions. Obtaining medical marijuana involves obtaining a certification from a registered doctor which certifies that the patient has a qualifying condition and a medical need for marijuana therapy. Once a patient has obtained a certification, he or she can then obtain a medical marijuana card from the Virginia Department of Health Professions. However, the card does not allow for the patient to cultivate marijuana on their own. Under the existing Virginia laws, only licensed medical marijuana dispensaries have the right to cultivate and dispense medical marijuana products. Patients can only purchase these products from the licensed dispensaries and must not possess marijuana for any other purpose.
