What is a military judge?
A military judge, also known as a judge advocate, is an officer in the United States Armed Forces who serves as a judge in military court. The judge is responsible for deciding cases involving military law, such as court-martials and other military legal proceedings. In New York, a military judge is typically a lawyer who has experience in military law. The judge must be a member of the United States Armed Forces and be appointed by the President, with the advice and consent of the Senate. The military judge presides over court martial proceedings and other court hearings, hearing witness testimony and other evidence, and determining guilt or innocence. Military judges also advise the military service members in their branches of the military on matters regarding military law. They review requests for discharge, and recommend either approval or denial of such requests. They also advise the military on regulations, law, and policy to ensure the legality of military operations. The military judge must stay up-to-date on any changes in military law, and must be impartial and unbiased during the cases they hear. The judge has the power to review submitted evidence and make a decision based on the law and the facts in the case. The military judge is a crucial part of the military justice system and is charged with administering justice fairly.
