What is the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code?
The International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code is an international regulation set up to ensure safety in the maritime transport of hazardous materials. The code is maintained and updated by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and is mandatory for international shipping. The IMDG Code provides detailed information on the safe transport, handling and storage of hazardous materials. It covers everything from labeling of hazardous materials to packaging, loading, unloading, and emergency response procedures. In Florida, all ships carrying hazardous materials must be approved by the U.S. Coast Guard to ensure that the IMDG Code is followed. Additionally, the Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) regulates the transportation of hazardous materials by ocean carriers under the Hazardous Materials Transportation Act (HMT). The IMDG Code is an important safety protocol that is necessary for safe and efficient maritime transportation of hazardous materials. It not only protects the environment, but also protects workers, goods, and ships from accidents and disasters. It is therefore critical that shippers, freight forwarders, and other involved parties follow the IMDG Code to ensure the safety of everyone involved in the maritime transport of hazardous materials.
