The Convention for the Suppression of Unlawful Acts against the Safety of Maritime Navigation, or SUA Convention, is an international agreement, initially formed by the United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea in 1988 and enacted in Washington in the same year. It seeks to protect ships and their passengers, crew, and cargo from criminal acts in international waters. The scope and intent of the SUA Convention are twofold: to prevent or suppress unlawful acts which may be committed on board vessels or against their passengers, crew, and cargo; and to prosecute or extradite the perpetrators of such acts. It applies to all vessels, regardless of their country of registration, and acts committed against them, their passengers, crew, and cargo, and to the perpetrators of such acts.
