What is the scope of the International Convention for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas?

The International Convention for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) is a treaty signed in 1966 that sets international standards for the conservation and management of fisheries in the Atlantic. It is one of five regional fisheries management organizations (RFMOs) that coordinate the conservation and sustainable use of fishery resources in California and the rest of the Atlantic Ocean. All ICCAT member countries must follow the same regulations and guidelines to ensure fishing is sustainable. These regulations include setting quotas for each species, specifying how many fishing vessels of each nation are allowed in each region, and setting minimum size limits for each species of fish. ICCAT also sets international research standards. Through the Information System for International Fisheries Management (ISIFM) the treaty provides information on fish stocks, fishing activities, and conservation efforts. It also sets standards to ensure data collection is accurate and covers the entire Atlantic. The purpose of ICCAT is to create a framework for the conservation and sustainable use of Atlantic tuna and other fish species. It is the international body responsible for the management and conservation of tuna stocks. The ICCAT Convention sets the framework for the international policy and management of commercial fishing in the Atlantic Ocean.
