What is the scope of the International Convention on Maritime Search and Rescue?
The International Convention on Maritime Search and Rescue (SAR) is an agreement among nations intended to provide a framework to coordinate global efforts in responding to distress calls at sea. It is a legally binding document that sets out the obligations of each country in the area of maritime search and rescue. The scope of the Convention covers a wide range of topics including, but not limited to, reporting of ships in distress, response times and coordination of search and rescue activities. It also includes regulations which specify who is responsible for the transportation of rescued persons, how they are to be cared for until they are safely returned to the shore and the search and rescue services that are to be provided. In addition, the convention states that any country that ratifies the convention is obliged to contribute to the search and rescue efforts. In Florida, the Coast Guard is responsible for all SAR efforts. As part of their services, they provide search and rescue services, coordinate communication among vessels in distress, and provide medical aid to those in need. Additionally, any vessel operating in territorial waters of Florida must report any missing persons, vessels, or aircraft to the SAR Center so that they can initiate a search and rescue mission. The International Convention on Maritime Search and Rescue is an important tool to ensure the safety of people at sea worldwide. It sets a standard which all countries must adhere to in order to effectively provide search and rescue services. By following the regulations outlined in this convention, Florida is able to provide the best possible care to those in need.
