What are the different types of municipal courts?
Municipal courts in Texas are the judicial arms of cities and towns. These courts handle a variety of cases, such as traffic violations, minor criminal offenses, and ordinance violations. Municipal courts are divided into three different types: justice of the peace courts, municipal courts, and municipal court of record. Justice of the Peace (JP) courts are the most basic type of municipal court. They are presided over by justices of the peace (or "JPs"), who have authority over a certain geographic area. These courts handle minor criminal offenses, such as traffic violations, ordinance violations, and some criminal offenses with a maximum penalty of a $500 fine and/or 180 days in jail. The maximum penalties that can be imposed in a municipal court of record are up to one year in jail and/or a fine of up to $4,000.
