The role of a municipal judge in Virginia is to preside over all legal matters that arise in a municipality. Municipal judges have the same authority as other judges in Virginia and must follow the same rules. They are responsible for making sure that all laws are followed and that justice is served. The judge will issue warnings to individuals or businesses who are violating local laws; hold hearings to determine the validity of complaints; and make determinations and issue orders regarding city zoning ordinances. Municipal judges are also responsible for authorizing the establishment of certain local offices and boards, such as a board of elections.
