What are the penalties for violating municipal traffic laws?

Violating a municipal traffic law can result in a variety of penalties depending on the severity of the offense. Generally, minor traffic offenses are punishable by fines and sometimes by points added to a driver’s record. In California, the fines for traffic violations can range from $35 to $1,000. Some violations, such as red light and stop sign infractions, will also add a point to a driver’s record. If a driver accumulates too many points, they can lose their license. More serious traffic violations, such as reckless driving and driving under the influence, can be punishable by jail time, license suspension or revocation, fines, and court-ordered substance abuse programs. Depending on the severity of the offense, violators may be held in jail for up to one year. A driver’s license may also be suspended for up to five years. If a traffic violation causes an accident with injury or death, the violator may face longer jail terms and more severe fines. In addition to criminal penalties, violators may also be required to attend court-ordered traffic school or be placed on a probation program. If the violation was committed in a school zone, the violator may be prohibited from driving in the school zone for up to three years. No matter the severity of the offense, it’s important for drivers to abide by municipal traffic laws to avoid any penalties or repercussions.
