In Oklahoma, the procedure for initiating a recall election of a municipal official is outlined in the state’s Municipal Code. To begin the recall process, a petition must be submitted to the Secretary of the State Election Board. This petition must be signed by a number of residents of the municipality equal to at least 25 percent of the number of voters who voted in the last election of that office. Once the petition is submitted, the State Election Board will review it and determine whether it meets the requirements set forth by the state law. If it does, they will certify the petition and order a recall election. Once a recall election has been ordered, the election must be conducted within 45 days. The official subject to recall will be provided with a list of the registered voters in the municipality and will have an opportunity to file a written statement and a campaign statement before the election. On the day of the election, ballots will be provided to all registered voters in the municipality. Voters will have the option to vote for or against the recall of the targeted official.
