What is the Indian Health Care Improvement Act?
The Indian Health Care Improvement Act (IHCIA) is a federal law that was passed in 1976 to improve the health care services and access to health care for Native American and Alaska Native people. The IHCIA is a comprehensive law that covers many aspects of health care, including health care services, health promotion, prevention and early intervention, and health education. It also increases access to traditional health care services and makes sure that Native American and Alaska Native people have access to health care services that are culturally and linguistically appropriate. In Tennessee, the IHCIA is enforced by the Office of Indian Health Care Services, a division of the Tennessee Department of Health. This office works with tribes, health care providers, and other stakeholders to ensure that Native Americans and Alaska Natives have adequate access to health care services.
